Composable commerce as the future of e-commerce
The traditional approach to building e-commerce - i.e. monolithic - is now a relic. Monolithic architecture assumed an all-in-one approach, i.e. building systems in such a way that all components were included. While this may not seem like a bad idea in theory, in practice it can mean - should one of the pieces of this complex puzzle fail - that the entire system fails.
The answer to the pain points associated with the monolithic approach is microservices. The microservices architecture consists of a combination of both internal and external services connected via their APIs. In such a model, each service is self-sufficient and fulfils a specific business purpose. Unlike the monolithic architecture, which was based on one common engine, when we want to make a change to a particular service, we work on a specific microservice rather than building the system from scratch.
The next step in developing a microservice architecture is headless. This is a technology that allows us to separate the backend (i.e. the entire technical background responsible for the operation of the application) from the frontend (i.e. everything the viewer sees). Why is this separation beneficial? Because it allows, among other things, better optimisation of the website, matching it to the user's expectations or experimenting on the frontend without 'interfering' with the backend layer.
Next-generation systems are built in a headless and 'API-first' model, which means that they can be easily integrated into any other application, regardless of the technology used.
Composable commerce is the approach that binds all the previously mentioned terms together. The idea is that composable commerce is forward-thinking and focused on experimentation, agility, bringing new e-commerce features to market quickly and creating a better shopping experience across all customer touchpoints.
