Challenge

To support the evolving needs of B2B and B2C merchants, Shopware recognized the need to transform its Extension Store – a vital hub with over 5,000 plugins – into a modern, scalable, and future-proof platform aligned with the company’s broader ecosystem growth. The existing on-premise setup required significant maintenance, manual updates, and limited scalability. Shopware needed a solution that would reduce operational overhead, enhance security, and allow seamless expansion, all while maintaining a high-performance storefront for their users.

Solution

Strix, being Shopware’s Platinum Partner, worked closely with Shopware to migrate the Extension Store from on-premise to Shopware Cloud, leveraging its API-first infrastructure and SaaS capabilities.

Developers from both sides combined their expertise in a tightly integrated workflow, sharing their innovative experiences to maximise the potential of the Extension Store. The tasks were also divided based on their specializations. The collaboration focused on:

  • Seamless Cloud migration: Transitioning to Shopware 6 Cloud eliminated hosting and infrastructure management burdens while enabling automatic updates and improved security.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Based on partner feedback, Strix helped implement key improvements, including Single Sign-On (SSO), an optimized mega menu, and a streamlined checkout process.
  • Efficient work distribution: Strix’s developers worked alongside Shopware’s frontend designers, while Shopware’s team handled backend integrations, licensing, and checkout optimizations, ensuring a smooth and collaborative development process.

Results

The migration delivered immediate and long-term benefits:

  • Reduced operational costs: By moving to SaaS, Shopware minimized hosting expenses and technical debt while maintaining scalability.
  • Faster, automated updates: The store now runs on the latest Shopware version with zero manual intervention, ensuring continuous improvements.
  • Future-ready flexibility: The new architecture allows easy third-party integrations and rapid UI updates without backend disruptions.
  • Stronger partnership: Strix’s close collaboration with Shopware’s developers ensured a successful relaunch, reinforcing both companies as leaders in e-commerce innovation.

With the revamped Extension Store now live, Shopware is well-equipped to expand with personalized features, additional languages, and regional currencies, further enhancing the experience for their global user base.
