Boosting Shopware 6 performance with Zstd Compression and Hypernode

Why compression matters

Webshops are loaded with content — product images, descriptions, scripts, and stylesheets. To ensure all of this data loads quickly, compression is essential. Traditionally, gzip has been the go-to compression method, but newer technologies like zstd are proving to be faster and more efficient.

What is Zstandard (zstd)?

Zstd is a modern compression algorithm that offers better compression ratios and faster decompression compared to gzip. This means:

  • Smaller file sizes — Less data to transfer.
  • Faster decompression — Quicker load times for your webshop visitors.
  • Improved server performance — Lower CPU usage on busy servers.

For Shopware 6, this can translate to a significant boost in both backend and frontend performance — a win-win for store owners and customers alike.

How we made it happen

Partnering with Hypernode, we rolled out and tested zstd compression on multiple Shopware 6 webshops. The results were impressive:

  • Page load times dropped significantly — especially on content-heavy pages.
  • Data transfer size decreased, speeding up delivery to end-users.
  • Server resource usage improved, allowing better handling of high traffic.
